My
name is Tiffany Klein. I am now 14 and in the 9th grade. Last
year, I was a member of Mr. Meyer's after school program. The
group was much fun and I enjoyed being a part of such a great
group. It was more of a "fun" group I guess you could
say. We did a lot of things to help out but yet we did many fun
activities to give back to our community, the contribution being
The Duke Children's Dance Marathon.
To give back to our community and helping others, we planned everything
and most of the supplies that were received were given to us through
donations. We had a 30 minute laser show before the dance that
was open to the public and admission was free, donations only.
Many people showed up and the laser show was a huge success.
It was also a unique way to give back. The dance-a-thon
was a huge monetary success. The admission for the dance was at
least $20 in donations per person. Meaning, a student was
to raise a minimum of $20 to get into the dance and stay for the
full 12 hours. A few weeks after the dance, I went to Duke
Medical Center for the Duke Children's Dance Marathon. There
I was interviewed by WRAL's head meteorologist, Greg Fishel.
I was interviewed and aired on WRAL's five o' clock news cast.
It was a great experience.
During this duration of weeks, while giving back to my community
while I was in Mr. Meyers' group, he taught me many things and
I learned many things. I learned that giving is better than
receiving. When you receive a gift from someone, it feels
great but when you give a gift to someone it is the greatest accomplishment
in the world. It feels so good to give more than you receive.
It is definitely the greatest feeling. I also learned that
I have to enjoy my life while I am here to live it. I visited
Duke in December of 2002 and I saw kids that were so helpless
and couldn't do anything about it. It made me think, what if one
of these kids were me? That's when I learned the best thing of
all, life is unpredictable and while you are here, you should
live your life to the fullest. I would like to thank Mr.
Meyer's for this, he helped me so much. I really do appreciate
it, more than he may ever know. It really is a great thing
he is doing and I hope to be a part of this for many years to
come.
