Spring 2004

The Chance of a Lifetime to Give a Lifetime of Chance

Indiana University held its twelfth annual Dance Marathon October 31- November 2, 2003, raising $405,000 for the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. This was the culmination of the efforts of 597 dancers, 200 chairs, 50 mass members and 15 families, as well as the host of alum and other spectators who fill the school’s HPER building each year to be part of the excitement! From selling roses on Valentine’s Day to holding a date auction, this group once again stopped at nothing to help the kids at Riley.

Katherine Cain, Dance Marathon Coordinator for Riley Hospital for Children, participated in Indiana University’s Dance Marathon for four years before becoming a summer intern at the hospital and quickly moving into her full-time position in the fall. “It is a little weird going back to Dance Marathon now that I work for Riley Hospital,” Cain says of her experience at the recent event. “Moving on from the participant side to the hospital side happened very fast; yet it is exactly what I had hoped for. I loved raising money for the children at the hospital and now I do that on a larger scale everyday. Going back though as a representative was special for me because I was able to share my story with current students and to illustrate to them that Riley Hospital not only changes the lives of the children that it treats, but each individual that it comes into contact with also.”

Children's Miracle Network thanks Katherine and the students at Indiana University for their continued support of the Dance Marathon program, and looks forward to working together to help even more kids in 2004! "It is easy to do things for our own families and loved ones, but to give of our substance for the stranger who is in need is the real test of our charity and our love for our fellowmen."
